Megestrol is a 3-oxo 4-steroid that is pregna-4,6-diene-3,20-dione substituted by a methyl group at position 6 and a hydroxy group at position 17. It has a role as an antineoplastic agent, a contraceptive drug, a synthetic oral contraceptive, an appetite enhancer and a progestin. It is a tertiary alpha-hydroxy ketone, a 17alpha-hydroxy steroid, a 20-oxo steroid and a 3-oxo-Delta(4) steroid.
